Amit Aryal is a PhD candidate at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and a consultant in the Health, Nutrition and Population Unit at the World Bank Group. Previously in Cambodia and now in Lao PDR, he is supporting the Ministry of Health to set up performance-based financing schemes aimed at improving the quality of primary care. His dissertation work focuses on needs, expectations, and confidence of Laotians in their health system and the role information plays in utilization of health services. Prior to enrolling in PhD, Amit worked extensively in Nepal’s health sector where, as advisor to former health minister Mr. Gagan K. Thapa, he championed a nationwide public health campaign against NCDs and helped draft a bill to ensure universal access to health insurance. He has also developed national health sector strategies and technical assistance packages within the Sector Wide Approach framework on behalf of WHO, UNICEF and DFID-financed technical assistance in Nepal. Amit holds an MPH in Health Policy and Management from Portland State University and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Oregon State University.
